Newcomers

Hopwood Ladies are happy to welcome all ladies, regardless of age or ability.  Whether you have a new bicycle or an old one in the back of the shed, seize the moment and join the fun.  It may be that you would like to cycle out once a week to a pub or cafe or you may seek big cycling adventures.  Whatever your aim, it all starts with that first turn of the pedals, and you can guarantee Alison small encouragement every step of the way.

What to expect

It is important for us to have some indication of your experience (or lack of it) before your first ride so that the leader can plan the trip to accommodate you.  Other riders will be made aware that we have a newcomer and will do their best to assist and encourage you, as they are often reminded of their own initial ride.  As well as a ride leader, there is also someone appointed to the back of the group to make sure that we all stay together.  This person will inform the front of the group if they feel that the newcomer or anyone else is struggling in any way and the pace will ease off (see ride etiquette for further details).

Your bike

Please feel free to join in with whatever bicycle you have, or, if you don't have one, borrow one or hire one from www.midlandcyclehire.co.uk .  If you think your bike is un-roadworthy, contact us for advice.  We have a club mechanic who can sort out most problems.

What should I wear?

Most ladies eventually start wearing some kind of lycra because it cannot be beaten for comfort, but feel free to wear anything that gives ease of movement and won't get caught in your bicycle chain.  We strongly advise everyone to wear a helmet for all rides.  Please ask if you would like to borrow one.

What about the weather?

We ride throughout the year, in most weathers.  In really adverse conditions, members are informed of cancellations or changed arrangements by text or phone.

Experienced cyclists joining Hopwood Ladies for the first time should be aware that we are not a racing club.  Please see ride etiquette .
