Why a ladies' club?

I tend to find that unless ladies have a natural athletic ability, coupled with the discipline and time to train at speed, it is unlikely that they will comfortably keep up with most male dominated cycling clubs.  Although most are doing their best to encourage women to cycle,  I think in order for anyone to consider taking up a physical activity that will require even minimal effort it needs to be clear to the individual that their needs will be met.

My motivation to meet up with Hopwood Ladies is very rarely for the fitness that I will gain.  I enjoy the company, I enjoy the countryside, the adventure, I enjoy our lunch and cake stops and I enjoy watching others excel at their personal challenges.  For some that may be their first 10 miles and for others an ‘End to End’!   As our group continues to grow, it assures me that other women too feel that the fitness we have all gained is just an added benefit to the wonderful times we have enjoyed together.

There is no competitiveness, just the odd bit of fun, there are occasional tears of frustration that are wiped dry, there is the extra effort we put in so as not to let our group down, there is the hysterical laughing, often at oneself, the nurturing of those starting out, the sharing and caring, the motivational talks, the ability to keep the kids going when mummy is tired herself, the feeling of belonging to something great, the excited anticipation of our next journey and the logistical nightmares I have to make sure that everyone can take some part in every ride.  But most of all there are the fantastic memories.
